What is a DTBO file?

The DTBO file type is primarily associated with Device Tree Compiler by Acme Systems. The Device Tree Compiler (DTC) is a tool for Linux that compiles Device Tree Source (DTS) files into a binary Device Tree Blob (DTB) format. The DTBO file extension is the extension for the Device Tree Blob Overlay files. The DTBO files allow a central Device Tree Blob (DTB) to be overlaid on the device tree. Device trees are data structures used in operating systems to support hardware configurations. The device tree describes non-discoverable hardware to the operating system using device tree files provided by the hardware’s vendors.
